The Crew
Brad Joyce
Brad Joyce has been on the water as long as he can remember. He’s from a commercial fishing family in the Port Credit area. He was Harbour Master at the Port Credit Harbour Marina in the early 70’s. As a commercial diver Brad saw the installation of the docks at Port Credit, along with the development of the other facilities there. He later moved into the position of Marine Manager at Ontario Place.
His watery career included General Manager of Marine Casualty and Fire Insurance, designated skipper on the 65′ yacht M.S. Richard C, owner/manager of Joyce Yachts and Marine Equipment in Oakville and Quinte Marina Ltd in Deseronto, yacht broker and auctioneer.
He has considerable experience in both sail and power… racing with Magistry in the Canada Cup Eliminations, several Mackinaw races, the trans Superior Yacht race – the longest fresh water race in the world – and the Lake Erie Race, among many others. Brad has also taken numerous boats to and from southern Ontario and Florida, most often in power vessels from 45′ and up. He brings extensive knowledge and experience to the re-creation of WaterWays Ontario.
Dusty Miller
Dusty Miller has been in and around boats all his life. As a youngster, he spent summers along the Trent Severn and among the 1000 Islands and 30,000 Islands. He learned to handle his father’s 50-foot a single screw, explore the waters in his sailboat but only as far as his mast was visible from the family cruiser. Dusty has owned many boats from a 23-foot Seabird to a 48-foot Elco. He has also restored, redesigned and built them and has taken to the salt and fresh water from Florida to Lake Superior.
Dusty established Ontario’s first hands-on boating school in 1988 and has passed on his boat handling skills to boaters all over the Great Lakes region and cottage country. His experience as a yacht broker began in the early 1980’s and expanded his comprehensive knowledge of all kinds of boats including the larger Grand Banks, Tollycraft and Bertrams.
Power Boating Canada recognized Dusty’s knowledge, experience and skill in 1989. His column “Handle with Care” and boat tests have been regular features ever since.
Dusty is currently working on a series of boat handling DVDs to take his skills to a wider audience. In addition he is part of the team creating a comprehensive Web site for Ontario boaters, www.waterwaysontario.com. The Dusty Miller Challenge is now a regular feature at the Toronto In Water Boat Show at Ontario Place and he demonstrates his skills in Lake Wow at the Toronto International Boat Show.
Tony Reynolds
Tony is a writer. He has written for radio stations, television programs, magazine articles, Web sites, and more. His interest in boating began very early, at the family cottage on Sturgeon Lake, in a Pal dinghy, both under sail and with a 1.5 horsepower Viking outboard perched on the transom. At summer camp he was an avid sailor. He also spent as much time as he could in canoes, on trips into Algonquin Park and beyond.
He was writer and field producer for 78 episodes of a boating television show and hosted all but the first 13 episodes. His travels with the program took him south to sailboats in the Virgin Islands, to mega yachts in Fort Lauderdale, and kayaks in the Intracoastal Waterway. He has caught fish off Port Canaveral and in the Everglades; sailed into the Chesapeake from Charleston; enjoyed a Great Lakes Cruising Club Rendezvous at Gore Bay in the North Channel; traveled the Ottawa River in a performance boat and a kayak; cruised the Muskoka Lakes in classic wooden runabouts; in short, enjoyed boating from one end of the Eastern Seaboard to the other.
Tony and Dusty Miller have collaborated on several different projects. Dusty was a regular on the television program. They present seminars, demonstrations and competitions on boat handling across Southern Ontario.
In the summers of 2002 and 2003, Tony was on the water every weekend, doing boat reports for radio station CFRB. At the Toronto In Water Boat Show in September 2004, Tony and Dusty presented the first Dusty Miller Challenge. This competition has continued every year since. Today, much of his attention is focused on the WaterWays Ontario project, but he continues to write about boats, boating, and tourism.

Family Cruise
A hundred years ago – give or take – commercial fishermen would clean up their boats on Saturday night in preparation for a Sunday cruise after church.
The 4th Annual Dusty Miller Challenge
Once again, the waters just north of Ontario Place (under the pods, next to the Cinesphere) were the setting for a quiet but very intense competition for boaters.
