J/70 North American Championship Regatta

J/70 North American Championship Regatta

Posted by Admin on Jul 16th 2014

The Rochester Yacht Club in New York hosts the North American J/70 regatta.

82 boats will vie for the North American championship through Sunday on Lake Ontario.  Crews have arrived at the Rochester (NY) Yacht Club from the US, Canada and Mexico, as well as Bermuda, Great Britain, Ireland, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Sweden.

The Opening Ceremony takes place Wednesday July 16th followed by practice runs, and the races continue through Sunday starting every morning at 10:30.

The J/70 is a 22-foot keelboat and each is carefully inspected to make sure they are all the same, from the weight to the sail area.  That way the only difference between them is the four-person crew.

"Rochester has an unusual footprint that makes it a fabulous place to hold these events. We run mostly four-legged race courses so two legs directly into the wind and two downwind. We will be doing four races a day so probably eight or nine hours on the water. It is a pretty athletic thing, especially when it gets breezy," said Joe Colling, J/70 U.S. class president.
