Family Cruise
A hundred years ago – give or take – commercial fishermen would clean up their boats on Saturday night in preparation for a Sunday cruise after church. These fishing schooners carried a lot of sail and were fast… they’d always do well at the Lake Ontario Schooner Races. Some of them had a double head rig and carried a pair of topsails.
The families on board this Sunday afternoon are likely the Speers, Belyeas, and Joyces and they’re cruising in Lake Ontario, having sailed out of Port Credit or Bronte. This photo is from the collection of Ed Joyce, Brad’s father, who carried on the family tradition as a commercial fisherman out of Port Credit.
